BATON ROUGE, Louisiana - This Saturday at 7 p.m., Southern University will host Savannah State University for a weekend football game. The Southern Jaguars are determined to make up for their 21-7 defeat against McNeese State University in the first week. Meanwhile, Savannah State is eager to secure a win in their opening game of the 2024 season.
Despite their loss, the Jaguars displayed a strong defensive performance in their season opener. The McNeese State Cowboys, a Division 1 FBS team, will face Texas University tomorrow and have previously competed against top teams like Florida University. The Jaguars' defense limited the Cowboys to just 108 passing yards on 23 attempts.
The Jaguars are focusing on enhancing their run defense performance against Savannah State, following a game where they surrendered 164 rushing yards and all three touchdowns by McNeese State were scored on the ground.
This crucial information will be of interest to the Tigers as they gear up for the upcoming match. The Tigers plan to rely on a potent running game in 2024 led by senior dual-threat quarterback Jadon Adams and Shamarcus Poole. Both players, along with senior wide receiver Da'Shun Mitchell, were named to the 2024 All-SIAC team.
Although the Tigers have yet to play an official game, they did engage in a live scrimmage last weekend. With a solid core of experienced players, the Tigers are aiming to build on their 2-8 record from 2023.
Another significant aspect of the upcoming game is the clash between Southern University's offense and Savannah State's defense. The Tigers boast a trio of preseason All-SIAC selections on defense, including Nathaniel Chisholm (2nd team), Deandre Creary (1st team), and Ahlik Booker (2nd team), who are expected to bolster the Tigers' formidable defense.
