LSU officially announced Wednesday night that Ed Orgeron is returning to Baton Rouge, joining Lane Kiffin's first coaching staff as the Tigers' Special Assistant to Recruiting and Defense.

It's a move that immediately injects experience, Louisiana roots, and one of college football's most recognizable personalities back into the program.

For LSU fans, it's also a reunion years in the making.

Orgeron will once again wear the purple and gold after leading LSU to the unforgettable 2019 national championship, a 15-0 season that many still consider the greatest team in college football history.

While his tenure eventually ended in 2021, there's never been any doubt about what Coach O means to LSU. Now, he'll have a chance to contribute in a different role.

The hire also reunites Orgeron with Lane Kiffin, one of his closest friends in the coaching profession.
