NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana - Following their victory over the USC Trojans in the previous season's Cotton Bowl Classic, the Tulane Green Wave began the 2023 season at the top of the American Athletic Conference standings.

After a disappointing two-win season in 2021, the Green Wave made an extraordinary jump to twelve wins in the 2022 season, a feat unprecedented in the FBS. On July 25, Tulane was predicted to defend their title as AAC champions according to a poll unveiled during the American Athletic Conference media day. Tulane secured 20 out of 34 first-place votes, claiming the top position for the first time in school history.

"It's always a privilege to have the support of others," expressed center Sincere Haynesworth, who opted to return for his fifth season. "It's a new experience for us, but it motivates us to work even harder. It provides us with another reason to push ourselves."

Michael Pratt will resume his role as the team's starting quarterback for his fourth season. Pratt guided Tulane to their inaugural AAC championship with a remarkable 46-45 comeback victory against USC, scoring 16 points in the final 4:05 of the Cotton Bowl Classic. Pratt concluded the season with 37 touchdowns (27 passing, 10 rushing) and just five interceptions.

Regrettably, the Wave must find a replacement for running back Tyjae Spears, who was named the AAC offensive player of the year and was selected 81st overall in the third round by the Tennessee Titans in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Head coach Willie Fritz appeared unimpressed by the preseason forecast. Despite being the preseason favorite the previous year, Houston ended up tied for fourth place with a 5-3 conference record. "We were ranked 7th in the preseason polls last year," he noted. "I always approach my preparation consistently. Reflecting on past achievements or setbacks won't help you reach your full potential."
