NEW ORLEANS -- On Tuesday, Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu announced his retirement just before the team's first training camp practice.

Mathieu's decision was unexpected, especially after participating in the team's veteran minicamp. At 33, Mathieu concludes his NFL career after 12 seasons, with three of those in New Orleans.

"As I retire, I'm filled with gratitude while closing this chapter of my life," Mathieu shared on social media Tuesday. "From my first college snap to my last NFL play, this journey has been a blessing. Football gave me purpose, discipline, and lasting memories. Most importantly, it gave me a community."

Known as the "Honey Badger" during his time at LSU, Mathieu was famed for his knack for turnovers, recording 7 forced fumbles, 8 fumble recoveries, 11 sacks, and 36 interceptions in his NFL career.

Drafted by the Cardinals in the third round in 2013, Mathieu spent his first five seasons there before joining the Houston Texans. He later played for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2019 to 2021, contributing to their Super Bowl LIV victory.

Mathieu earned three first-team All-Pro selections and attended three Pro Bowls.

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis mentioned that Mathieu's retirement decision was recent and that he didn't attempt to dissuade him.

"He's a legendary player from Louisiana and in the NFL. I truly appreciate his time with us. He was fantastic," Loomis stated. "I can't say enough good things about him. ... I wish him all the best."

Mathieu, a Louisiana native, played for LSU for two seasons, achieving 4 interceptions, 6 sacks, 16 pass deflections, 8 fumble recoveries, and 11 forced fumbles. In his sophomore year, he returned two punts for touchdowns.

He was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year, won the Chuck Bednarik Award, and was a Heisman Trophy finalist as a sophomore. Mathieu was dismissed from the team before the 2012 season and entered the NFL draft the following spring.

Mathieu, who hopes to pursue coaching, has maintained a strong connection with LSU despite his dismissal, donating $1 million to the school in 2016. The players lounge was renamed in his honor the following year.
