BATON ROUGE, Louisiana — On Saturday, Southern's backup quarterback Czavian Teasett passed for 316 yards and three touchdowns, leading the team to a 42-10 victory over Savannah State, a Division II member. This win marked the program's first triumph under coach Terrence Graves.
Southern's defense limited Savannah State to only one first down and 65 total yards, while racking up 554 yards themselves. The Tigers managed their sole first down on Jadon Adams' 81-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter.
Joshua Griffin kicked three field goals in the opening half, from distances of 38, 44, and 49 yards, giving Southern a 9-7 lead just before halftime. Shortly after, Teasett found Chandler Whitfield for a 38-yard touchdown pass, marking Southern's first touchdown of the game.
Teasett took over from starter Noah Bodden, who had completed 4 of 10 passes for 47 yards with an interception, and proceeded to throw three touchdown passes to three different receivers.
Southern (1-1) finished the game with 26 consecutive points. Teasett connected with Dupree Fuller for a 31-yard touchdown and with Darren Morris for a 33-yard score. Teasett completed 17 of 29 passes without throwing an interception.
