This week, the Southeastern Conference is heading to Hollywood, with LSU football taking center stage.
“Any Given Saturday,” a seven-part documentary about SEC football, premieres Tuesday on Netflix.
In July, during SEC Media Days in Atlanta, conference officials offered a preview screening of the first episode, which highlights last season’s thrilling 36-33 LSU victory over South Carolina.
Unlike the “SEC Storied” documentaries on the SEC Network, “Any Given Saturday” provides an unfiltered look behind the scenes in its first episode, capturing the Tigers and Gamecocks as they prepare for and compete in last September’s pivotal early-season game. The language can be colorful, but the emotions and intensity are genuine.
LSU coach Brian Kelly mentioned last week that he hadn’t watched the completed series, but he appreciated the documentary’s realistic style.
“We said, ‘Let’s be who we are,’” Kelly explained.
“There are narratives based on what people see on the sidelines. They don’t fully understand what your program is about or how you operate. We believed this would be a good way to change those perceptions and show the reality.”
The series is produced by Box to Box Films, a company known for creating several sports documentaries for Netflix, including the popular “Formula 1: Drive to Survive,” “Full Swing” on professional golf, and “Sprint,” which features LSU Olympic gold medalist Sha’Carri Richardson.
In July, Netflix also launched an NFL documentary series titled “Quarterback: Season 2,” featuring former LSU Heisman-winning quarterback Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals.
